    No doubt aided by the phenomenon that was Black Panther, African fashion captured consumer imaginations with its colorful wax prints, striking kente cloth and unmistakable tribal motifs. Pinterest says searches for African-influenced style soared 229 percent. Wakanda Forever, indeed.

    Fashion continues down the casualization road as styles typically only seen inside the home step out onto center stage. Following the pajama trend comes the advent of robes and wrap-style outwear as consumers embrace comfort on the fashion front. People searched for robe-inspired silhouettes 689 percent more in 2018 than in the previous year, according to Pinterest.

  • Snakeskin

    Consumers are feeling the call of the wild, moving on from leopard print to explore new ways of bringing animal markings into their wardrobes. Snake skin searches slithered upward 642 percent last year, Pinterest says. 

  • Ethical and sustainable fashion

    Here’s a hopeful sign that sustainability is seeping into the mainstream consumer mindset: Pinterest searches for sustainable fashion jumped 34 percent year-on-year in 2018 as women looked for clothing and shoes that leave less of an impact on the planet. Consumers also signaled their growing interest in fashion rentals, as access versus ownership continues to disrupt the industry. Pinterest data shows searches for earrings made from or mimicking the animal print leaped 679 percent over the course of 2018. Here, the Duchess of Sussex lends the “Meghan Markle Effect” to the trend, modeling oval tortoiseshell sunglasses.
