ÒImprovisation, hi-tech, classic, world, human being: my collection reflects inspiration from these key words.Ó – Bodysong
ÒJapan is known as the ÔLand of the Rising Sun,Õ but my collection is titled ÔLand of the Setting Sun.Õ It means that I am looking for something further. But I wanted to come back to Tokyo, where I came from, and show who I am now. For me, this show is like a thank you and a chance for people in Japan to experience the whole world of Kozaburo.Ê
ÒAs for the collection, generally I was attracted to the land artists of the Õ60s and Õ70s. This photograph, however, was taken on on my trip to New Mexico, where I saw the work of Ra Paulette. He’s an American cave sculptor who never studied art professionally, but came back from the Vietnam War and began digging holes on the mesa. His work is purely intuitive, which I admire.Ó – Kozaburo Akasaka
ÒIt has been eight seasons since I started Landlord, so I wanted to take this opportunity to show my archive all together with special pieces made for my first Tokyo show. Although each collection has had a very different theme, they could all be worn together in my head. I wanted to show that across all the seasons, there is coherence.
ÒI collaborated with the New YorkÐbased artist Meguru Yamaguchi, who painted directly on the clothes. I gave him my archive and told him to do whatever you want. Growing up, my perspective of fashion was influenced by Õ90s Tokyo.ÊFruitsÊmagazine, designers like Christopher Nemeth, Urahara streetwearÑproper Õ90s Tokyo style. Through this one show, I wanted to show the context I have been working with for the past eight seasons. The mix of colors from Meguru Yamaguchi, the street casting. To me, JapanÕs original fashion culture is the story of street culture, and that’s what I wanted to show.” – Ryohei Kawanishi, Landlord
