GIORGIO DI SANT’ANGELO, American, born Italy, 1933–1989, Klimt Dress, Fall/Winter 1969 –70 Velvet, cotton , and metallic brocade Hamish Bowles Collection During his “gold period” (1900–1910), Gustav Klimt gained renown for his exceptional paintings of women amid bold, swirling gold patterns. His knowledge about goldwork came from his father, Ernst Klimt the Elder, a noted Bohemian gold engraver. His interest in patterning was inspired by diverse sources ranging from Mycenaean gold designs and Japanese screens to the work of his life companion, fashion designer Emilie Flöge. Klimt used symbolic and allegorical imageryto explore themes of love, beauty, and the human condition. Klimt’s distinctive compositions have inspired designers such as Giorgio di Sant’Angelo, John Galliano, and L’Wren Scott. Di Sant’Angelo’s Klimt Dress reinterprets the painter’s artistic vision in sartorial form, attesting to its enduring allure.
