Anthony Turner likened models’ coifs at Rochas to origami. He pulled hair back from their faces and looped the tresses over twice, “so it’s almost like an ‘s’ shape, and then squashed in, like a little bow,” he explained. “We’re tying it with pieces of fabric that are from the collection.” Turner said strands of hair would be loosened for a fly-away effect, and the idea overall was not to make the style look too complicated or too much like couture. Product-wise, he used L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Morning After Dust. — Jennifer Weil

“We are doing the ultimate Balmain cool-girl hair,” said Sam McKnight. “It’s swept over to one side, so she is a little sexy. She’s a little bit done and then undone. We’re trying to make her look healthy, as opposed to too overdone. There’s an ease and a sort of effortless to it.” The hairstylist explained the idea was to add some movement to keep tresses from seeming flat. Certain models’ hair was left au naturel to attain that look, while others’ was blown dry. Products used here included McKnight’s eponymous line’s dry texturizer. He and Balmain creative director Olivier Rousteing had been looking at the quintessential “Balmain girls” from the recent past, and how “natural, effortless and easy they were — and we brought that back in,” said McKnight.  — Jennifer Weil

The hairstyle by Guido Palau was inspired by the boyish idea of a woman, shared with Pat McGrath’s beauty look. A group of models walked the runway with shorter hair with said boyish look, while another group sported soft ponytails. The key product was Palau’s Wax Blast 10 finishing spray.

“A modern type of a bohemian woman” inspired hairstylist Anthony Turner, a quintessentially Missoni innocence.” This idea was reflected in a very light, easy yet cool hairstyle and in a beautiful texture. As the show was held outdoors, the hair had to be light and free to move. Using Moroccanoil products, Turner created low ponytails, and when girls were ready to walk he just “destroyed” them so that “even if there is a ponytail it’s gonna be very romantic,” Turner explained. Haircuts, Afros and curly hair were kept natural, maintaining each girl’s personal style.

Hairstylist Sam McKnight was inspired by a bold attitude. “The look at Fendi is a little bit quirky” and masculine, he said. Short haircuts close to the hairline were highlighted by blue, green and petrol shades in the same tones as the makeup to create that sharp masculine look. The Fendi woman is also strong, “but shares a quirky mystery at the same.” McKnight sprayed his own Cool Girl and Modern Hairspray mist on models wearing ponytails, pulled up very quickly for a natural effect.

Hairstylist Duffy played on the idea of wet hair, as if the girls had just stepped out of the water. Hair was kept “supershiny, superwet-looking,” he said. But there was also an element of a “punky take on the Fifties,” though “it’s not Teddy Boy, it’s not rockabilly,” Duffy underscored.  The hair was well tightened on the back, using a lot of strong mousse and fixed with spray.

Hairstylist John Pecis was inspired by the atmosphere of a trip to India, with a touch of “a late Sixties — early Seventies look.” The idea was about a girl who just attended the ultimate music festival — think Jimi Hendrix or The Beatles. The hair was a little dampened and kept back off the face, conveying the idea of a girl on the move. But it was anything but messy: “We put an effort into controlling the hair and put it in a shape,” Pecis underscored. “It was like models had put their hands into their hair to push it back. The hair became dampened and heavy by starting with a volumizing mousse to hold the hair back and give a little bit of a wave. Then a curling iron was used to give a little bit of a wave, then a dressing cream was put over the top of that wave to feel like it was wet, even if it wasn’t.” It was all about an easy-yet-pretty look  “If you want to achieve it in your life you just have to use the right products to hold the hair in place,” Pecis suggested.

A beautiful, sexy yet natural woman inspired hairstylist Guido Palau. The models’ hair was kept in romantic ponytails twisted back on themselves with elastics for a shorter effect. Using his Full Frame 07 mousse, Palau created a wet look and added shine with Shine Flash 02 glistening mist. The hair was pulled back but softened around the models’ ears and hairline for a little messy, casual look that was simultaneously very sexy.  The main feature was the texture and the softness around the face.

“It’s a kooky, strange, modern take on Forties hair,” said hairstylist Anthony Turner. “I wanted it to feel like what a girl nowadays would do if she wanted to do a Forties hairdo. She wouldn’t spend hours wet setting her hair.” Turner layered up products such as L’Oreal professional Pli and L’Oreal full volume extra, working it all the way up to the top of the head until it was drenched. He sectioned hair, pinned it away and blow-dried it with a Mason Pearson brush. He pulled hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck and used a curling iron to roll hair up for a looped ponytail lo

“She is kind of a modern take on the young Seventies girl,” said hairstylist Anthony Turner. “She’s very feminine but with a masculine touch – kind of tough.” Turner kept hair very unkept. He used salt spray and dry shampoo to achieve a matte and fluffy feel. He wanted a Californian feel as a nod to the Americana theme.

“In terms of hair, it’s been very soft and individual,” said hairstylist Duffy. “It’s monastic. It’s very classic, very clean, very graphic.” He parted hair in the middle, created two ponytails that were braided at the nape of the neck, and then blow-dried hair straight.

“Hair is kind of sexy,” said hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. “It has to be chic. It has to feel cool and feel like it’s done with haste.” Models tresses were sprayed down with Sugarlift for a sexy and slightly dirtier effect – so it feels like it’s a couple of days old.

“Christopher talked about a kind of sexy woman – a tough woman.” said hairstylist Guido Palau. “The hairstyle is a very simple one, but kind of tough and slightly aggressive. It’s a little bit sexy in a slightly subversive way, and not in an obvious way which is reflected in the collection.” Hair was pulled up into a greasy product ponytail with a center part. Redken Shine Flash shine spray and Control Addict 28 spray were used on a simple ponytail for a gritty feel.

Hairstylist James Pecis was inspired by an 1850s doll and went with the natural texture of the hair to keep it child-like. The hair look was naïve, playful, soft and fragile. Hair was parted on the left side. Meanwhile, for models with thinner hair, extensions were used to give it more fullness in the back.

“The inspiration was a very naive hairstyle but on a very un-naive girl,” said hairstylist Anthony Turner, using KMS hair products. “She’s kind of a good girl gone bad. It just felt quite witchy.” Models were given a rough side-parting with stylists using hands in place of brushes for a more natural look. For mid-lengths, hair was sprayed, then sectioned off, lifted then sprayed again. He let the tresses go and then sprayed once more. He applied Sea Salt Spray on damp hair – just on the top – and dragged it out with his fingers. Once hair was sufficiently dried, he used Makeover Spray through hair and ends for a grungy volume. He used a bobby pin to secure the front for that young school girl style and the KMS dry shampoo for a fluffy fly-away look.

“There was a real rock concert feel to the show this season,” said hairstylist Eugene Souleiman. “I wanted to create a look that was disheveled, raw and full of texture.” He sprayed Wella Professionals Elements Conditioning Leave-In Spray at the roots then used curling tongs to twist hair. Using EIMI products and GHD tools, Souleiman took a laid-back approach and kept the hairstyle cool, nonchalant and youthful. “The hair needed to look unwashed, a couple of days old from dancing away at your favorite gig.” said Souleiman. “I created an anti-cosmetic approach to the hair – a juxtaposition to the glamorous makeup look to allow the girls’ personalities to come through.”

Sam McKnight kept hair natural, cool and relaxed. “Who knows if they haven’t done it themselves?” said Knight. “There’s lots of baseball caps, there’s lots of girls with nice layered haircuts, so it’s kind of individual. It was cool girls going for a walk on a Sunday morning. Without any embellishments, without any blow-dries or anything like that.” He wanted a hairstyle that looked a bit slept-in. McKnight sprayed tresses with his Hair by Sam McKnight Cool Girl spray to give it a bit of texture.

Anthony Turner for Wella employed a healthy serving of Sculpt Force Gel to get a wet look at Prabal Gurung. “It’s meant to kind of look like she’s emerged from a swimming pool and combed her hair back — it’s got that Nineties feel to it, could be Eighties I guess, but Nineties essentially,” Turner said. “It feels very minimal in the way it looks, but ultimately, this hair’s quite sexy.” On damp hair, Turner used gel and a wide-tooth comb. He curled the bottom and finished it with Glam Mist so the hair didn’t look dry.

Josh Wood for Redken created one standout hair look at Alexander Wang for model Stella Lucia, using an eight-hour process to dye her hair a multitoned pinkish purple, with gray roots. “There’s something about pink hair that’s been around quite a long time. I’ve christened this rose quartz, because of the idea of something very crystalline and something very cool,” Wood said. “At the salon in London I see a lot of people coming in wanting pink. But for me this shows you can have a very personalized tone of pink that suits you.” Wood also noted that as other beauty categories take a backseat — think no-makeup makeup or barely there nail polish (both present at Wang) — hair has its time to shine. “As beauty gets in some ways more recessive, hair color comes more at you — it’s like glamorous angst,” he said.

A textured, loose ponytail was the look at Public School this season. “We work to prep the hair really great and then we mess it up,” said Allen Ruiz, who led hair for Aveda. Ruiz created the look by flat-ironing the hair, then adding generous amounts of the Aveda Texture Tonic to give the hair a gritty texture. He pulled the hair back into a ponytail, then shook the hair to have pieces naturally fall out. Before securing the style, Ruiz pulled out a few pieces of hair at the back of the head to create a messy, but put-together look.

With the help of yards of extensions, models were seen with intricate braids cascading down to their knees. Led by Tina Outen, hairstylists started by creating French braids at both sides of the models’ heads, then added in the extensions when needed to create a flowing Rapunzel-like braid. “Because it’s heavy, the length needs to be added from the top,” she said. After the braid was in place, a smaller braided extension was wrapped around the larger braid. Hair was finished with the addition of fake flowers, colorful for the good girls, black for the bad girls.

A loose half ponytail was the look at Victoria Beckham this season. “It’s this childlike kind of idea of taking your hair away,” said Guido, who led hair for Redken. “The charm and ease of it, the luxury of being undone feels so rich now.” To prep hair, Guido washed models’ hair with Redken Clean Maniac Micellar Shampoo to create a clean texture. Hair was brushed with Tangle Teezers to flatten the hair cuticle and impart a shine. Then Guido pulled part of the hair back in a loose manner to create an effortless half-up, half-down style.

Individuality was the main theme this season for hair. James Pecis, who led hair for Oribe, emphasized natural texture for models with shorter and curlier hair and created natural waves for those with longer and straighter hair. “It has to look like them on their best day and it has to look expensive,” he said. To style models with longer hair, Pecis used the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer, then created waves with a one-and-a-half inch curling iron. Oribe Maximista Thickening Spray was used throughout to create volume.

Channeling nature, Kien for Oribe created two strict braids that framed models' faces, with a third braid tied into a ponytail. "What we wanted to do was do a braid, but it's really about the direction of the braid, where it's almost like a volcanic situation into a tight fitting cornrow, and then afterwards we're going to pull and roughen up the braids so it's nice and airy and roughened up - as if the volcano has had an explosion." Models with curls had their natural texture enhanced with Foundation Mist, Royal Blowout and Shine Spray "to enhance the curls," Kien said.

After combing a deep side part on the left side of the head, Smith applied Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Mask to the hair in order to create a clean, wet look. Smith then opted for Tresemmé Keratin Smooth Shine Serum instead of a gel to keep the hair looking wet rather than slick.

  • Spring 2018 Hairstyles From Fashion Week: Tory Burch

At Tory Burch, lead hairstylist Guido Palau for Redken gave each model a good old-fashioned blowout using round brushes Ñ even on the girls with curly and coarse textures. "She's showing in a garden, and I didn't want all the textures to show [up] against the nature that was there," said Palau. "The inspiration was the Tory Burch girl who is easy sophistication. I think there's a sort of genre, being cool but sophisticated and pulled together, and Tory always seems to get that magic girl." To achieve the glossy look, Palau first shampooed hair with Redken Diamond Oil Glow Dry, a new product out this fall. To protect the hair from heat and smooth it out, he used the brand's Satinwear 04, an updated version of the brand's original thermal blow-dry lotion, Satinwear 02.

  • Spring 2018 Hairstyles From Fashion Week: Baja East

“The clothes are a mix of very sophisticated but sporty, so we decided to have a ponytail which sits exactly where the hole of a baseball cap would be,” said Odile Gilbert, lead hairstylist for TRESemmé. “We left two pieces of hair hanging out in the front because the girl is active.” Most girls had ponytails — five actually had baseball caps to loop them through — but girls with curly and short hair were left alone. “The ponytail is really American,” said Gilbert. “You don’t see it anywhere else.” Gilbert used TRESemmé Keratin Smooth Flatiron Smoothing Spray to smooth out strands before tying them up.

“I’m calling it indigenous tribal texture, because I’m trying to take that naturally saltwater beach texture to the next level — a luxe texture,” said lead hairstylist Nelson Vercher for Rita Hazan, backstage at Veronica Beard. “It’s not just about going into the ocean and putting your hair in a bun and [putting] it down, it’s about layering products in the right way and keeping product off the root. You want a dry look, that’s what’s going to give it that authentic tribal look — frizzies and just not so controlled.” Vercher relied on Hazan’s latest product, the Lock and Block Protective Spray, which is a dry, weightless mist with UV protection designed and designed to hold style and color in place. “It gives it that shine and definition,” said Vercher, who curled strands of hair at random — using a technique he related to coloring strands of hair balayage style.

At Eckhaus Latta, the cast of models was a diverse crew, but hair was decidedly uniform. “The clothing is edited in a way that’s still Eckhaus and lacy and tie-dye but there’s something minimal about it for the first time. They have this amazing casting as usual, but this is one of those perfect times where it’s time to put the models’ hair away and make them look more cohesive [for the brand],” said Holli Smith, who keyed hair for Oribe. Smith slicked back hair with Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray and Volumista Mist to control and define hair. For models with coarse textures, she used a gel serum. “It’s a rock ‘n’ roll, Seventies-inspired wave,” said Justine Marjan, who led hair for TRESemmé. “The collection is really feminine and [the designer] wanted something to edge it up.” She first brushed the hair straight and sprayed TRESemmé Tres Two Hair Spray throughout to give it texture. Then using a flatiron, Marjan created “s-shaped” waves throughout. TRESemmé Fresh Start Volumizing Dry Shampoo was then massaged at the root of the hair to create a lived-in look.

“I’m doing a little bed head thing on the crown so it feels like they’ve slept in their hair,” said Guido, who keyed hair for Redken. “The shape is sort of Seventies rock ‘n’ roll.” To create the grungy look, Guido applied Redken Wax Blast to the hair to make it look messy and textured. The product helped make the hair appear matte, which played into the grungy style.

“It’s like a rodeo queen after a night out,” said James Pecis, who led hair for Amika, on the textured look he created. He used ample amounts of the Amika Silken Dry Conditioner to give the hair some weight and create a grungy texture. To finish the look, Pecis used what he calls a “granny comb” to pull back the hair at one side of the face.

To counterbalance the feminine clothing, Holli Smith for Oribe gave models a tight ponytail wrapped in two yards of natural toned leather. “I love this Alexander McQueen and Steven Klein shot in the Nineties of these loops of gauzy cloth [in the hair],” she said on the inspiration. Smith prepped the hair with Oribe Volumista Mist to accentuate the natural texture and secured the leather strap by sewing the material at the top and bottom.

Jay Braff for Aveda created a braided bun that looked simple but took a lot of steps to create. Models' hair was flat on top so headpieces could be incorporated into the looks. "I like how intelligent it is," Braff noted. "It's very simple, but it's almost complex to do because it's so simple." The overall look was inspired by composer Xavier Cugat and photographer Maria Svarbova's swimming pool series.

Hair, like the makeup at the Michael Kors spring show, was left in its raw, natural state. Lead hairstylist Orlando Pita, who has along with Dick Page and Jin Soon Choi has been working backstage at Kors for years, said he hardly used any product to create the hair look. “It’s a very sporty, beach-y collection,” said Pita. “Michael didn’t want the girls to have product in their hair — we mainly used water. There were maybe three or four exceptions where I had to use a little product, and most of the girls have a middle part.” Each model’s hair was given a bit of a roughing up, and that was that. With the exception of five supermodels who wore their hair raked back into ponytails — Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Carolyn Murphy, Joan Smalls and Kate Upton — everyone’s hair was worn down.
