a Labor of Love
Selman works from his chelsea studio with two full-time designers and a revolving door of interns and collaborators. For his spring collection, he looked to the late Aaronel deRoy Gruber, a prolific artist in the Sixties and Seventies known for her colorful, motorized Plexiglas sculptures. “I’m taking the idea of transparency and gradients and playing with sunrises and sunsets,” he said, “but then also mixing it with classic Adam Selman qualities like denim and shirting…rendering those boyish qualities in a super feminine way.” -

new textures and fabrics, including colorful crocheted knitwear,
a washed canvas he referred to as “denim- not-denim” and a few fully beaded special-occasion looks. Selman isn’t afraid of a little kink, either — his looks frequently wink to the boudoir — and the spring lineup will feature a naked lady print inspired by Forties porn. -

Selman said she’s an eternally playful, sexy woman who loves to make an entrance. “I do want to make clothes that are accessible, but I don’t want to make clothes that are already out there.
I’ve never wanted that,” he said. “I want to be in a space where a girl can walk into a store and say, ‘This is like nothing else in here and this is why I want to buy it, because I want to be that girl that doesn’t look like any other girl in the room.’” -

Selman hunts for fabrics to use for the cFdA/ Vogue Fashion Fund design challenge. “Last season, I was like, ‘I don’t think I can work harder than what I’m doing right now.’ But I keep working harder; I’ve never worked harder in my entire life,” Selman said. “I say ‘yes’ to everything. The hustle is real. But the side projects keep the studio going. If it’s a means to make my dreams come true, then it’s worth it.”
