“Warren Beatty was a f—ing killer in his day,” Kaufman famously recalled. “The young girls would go and sit on his lap. I’d walk over and say, ‘Is this OK?’ And he’d say, ‘It’s OK.’ Sinatra was the same way. Very playful.” Elaine in 1972.
In 1978, famous shutterbug Ron Galella was on the wrong end of Kaufman’s notorious temper. After catching the photographer snapping the swarms of celebrities entering and exiting the restaurant, Kaufman hurled a garbage lid at him.
“Growing up in Queens, I was always looking to get out,” Kaufman once recalled. “I had no idea what I’d become, but I didn’t think it would be a housewife…Having a job just seemed very natural to me.” Elaine in 1982.
Woody Allen famously spoke to “no one but Elaine” while at the restaurant, James Brady noted in an 1983 interview with New York Magazine.
Although famously frosty to female patrons, Kaufman proudly celebrated her favorites. Pictured here with Marisa Berenson in 2003.
